Rugby World Cup 2023 | Match Centre | Ireland 59:16 Tonga

Ireland maintained their undefeated streak in the World Cup, securing a bonus-point victory over Tonga in a historic match for Johnny Sexton held in Nantes.

The Six Nations Grand Slam champions got off to a flying start with early tries by Tadhg Beirne, Caelan Doris, and Mack Hansen. Johnny Sexton, who had a standout performance, added a fourth try, surpassing Ronan O’Gara as Ireland’s all-time leading scorer.

Tonga managed to score a try through Vaea Fifita before half-time, but Ireland continued to dominate with tries from James Lowe, Bundee Aki (scoring twice), and Rob Herring.

Although Tonga posed a tougher challenge compared to Romania, Ireland emerged victorious and collected 10 points ahead of their highly anticipated clash with South Africa.

Andy Farrell’s squad, aware of Tonga’s potential threat, fielded a nearly full-strength team. Sexton’s remarkable performance, amassing 1,090 career points, allowed him to exit the game at halftime with the bonus point secured.

However, Sexton emphasized the importance of collective achievements over individual records.

Despite Tonga’s early promise, Ireland ultimately outclassed the 15th-ranked team in the world. With their eyes set on a tough match against South Africa, Ireland displayed their relentless drive for success, showcasing their prowess in the tournament.
