Hosts dominates to defend Hartpury Sevens title
The Hartpury Sevens tournament took place on May 13 at the Hartpury Sports Academy, marking the 8th edition of the annual tournament. The day was filled with great rugby sevens on display and featured teams from all over the UK competing for the Cup, plate, and shield trophy. The participating teams included the famous Samurai team, Godfathers, and the host Hartpury itself.
Despite strong competition from other teams, it was the hosts Hartpury who dominated the competition and eventually won the title. The pool stage was already exciting, but the tournament went to a different level in the knock-out stage.
In Pool 1, Bristol Uni’s Maroon 7s team and Samurai qualified. In Pool 2, Hartpury and the Petelo All Stars from Cheltenham made it under the top two teams, while in Pool 3, England University Sports and Bristol Universities’ 2nd side Slym Shadys qualified. Finally, in Pool 4, the Marching Poaches and Empire 7s came through as top-seeded.
Although every team had another shot for silverware, it was eventually the Marist Old Boys who faced Acorn 7s in the Shield final, which Acorn 7s won. Bristol’s Maroon 7s faced Empire 7s in the Plate final and won. Finally, in the Cup final, hosts Hartpury beat the Marching Poaches to defend the title.
Overall, the event was a huge success, with a sunny and beautiful day in Gloucestershire making for a great atmosphere. The Hartpury Sevens tournament was another successful promotion for rugby sevens, with teams from across the UK coming together to compete for the Cup, plate, and shield trophy.
