New Zealand and South Africa won the women’s and men’s titles respectively to cap an incredible three days as HSBC SVNS touched down in Hong Kong for the first leg of this year’s three-tournament World Championship series.

There were also podium finishes for France’s women and Spain’s men who won their third-place play-off matches against Canada and New Zealand respectively to claim the bronze medal.

Fifty years on since the sport’s first tournament at its spiritual home, huge crowds saw a feast of action with Saturday’s 41,457 fans setting a new record for Hong Kong Sevens for a single day attendance.

The iconic event, which created a party atmosphere, was hailed as a huge success by World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson.

He said: “Congratulations Hong Kong for 50 glorious years of the iconic Hong Kong Sevens. And what a way to celebrate with rugby’s biggest party weekend.

“For World Rugby and fans around the Hong Kong Sevens holds a special place in our hearts. It put sevens on the map. It has played it role in rugby’s global growth and it has been instrumental in Sevens joining the Olympic Programme.

“It is an event where tradition and innovation goes hand in hand. The new Kai Tak stadium epitomises that. It is a great place for rugby. The fans love it. We love it.”

Defending champions New Zealand edged out fierce rivals Australia 19-14 in the women’s final to once again reaffirm their status as the best side in the world.

An eagerly-awaited clash saw the Black Ferns Sevens secure a fourth straight title in Hong Kong and maintain their recent dominance over Australia.

It was another close-fought affair but New Zealand were worthy victors in a game which saw the brilliant duo of Jorja Miller and Maddison Levi both get on the scoresheet again.

After their sixth title of the season, Player of the Final Risi Pouri-Lane said: “To come here and play in a final at the home of Sevens Rugby – in such an iconic stadium has been an awesome privilege.

“The girls showed grit and heart and it took a whole squad effort.”

South Africa’s men produced a stunning performance to beat defending champions Argentina 35-7 in the final to get a huge monkey off their back.

The Blitzboks showed all their class to win their first-ever Hong Kong title in the first leg of this year’s three-tournament World Championship series, with Valladolid next up on May 29-31 before Bordeaux in early June.

Amid emotional celebrations, mercurial captain Impi Visser said: “I’m just so proud of the boys because we achieved something special today.

“I think we broke the hoodoo at Hong Kong Sevens and can finally call ourselves champions here.”

South Africa men’s team beat Fiji to seal the gold medal in New York and clinch the overall HSBC SVNS Series title, while New Zealand’s all-conquering women clinched another title with a hugely dramatic final win over Australia.

Both prizes were on the line but Philip Snyman’s Blitzboks edged out Fiji 10-7 in an enthralling final to cap an action-packed weekend of action in the first-ever tournament in New York.

South Africa captain Impi Visser, playing his 50th tournament on the global circuit, sent Gino Cupido racing clear for the opening try and Tristan Leyds added a second before Terio Veilawa got Fiji back into the game to set up a tense finale.

The Blitzboks, though, showed remarkable defensive resolve to hold on for the win, adding to their Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver crowns, while Fiji made it six podium finishes in six HSBC SVNS Series tournaments.

“What a performance! We stuck to our guns because we knew Fiji were going to be physical, but thankfully we came out on top.”

— HSBC Sevens Player of the Final, Selvyn Davids

Inspirational skipper Visser added: “It was a massive defensive effort and testament to all our hard work. We couldn’t have scripted it any better and we’re just thankful we came up with the win.”

Black Ferns Edge Australia in Thriller

New Zealand’s women’s side claimed a fifth HSBC SVNS Series title in six main Series tournaments this season in New York after edging out Australia 22-21 in an extraordinary final.

The Black Ferns were already crowned overall series winners on Saturday but their eyes were firmly fixed on a seventh all-time title in the USA. They claimed it with a hugely dramatic final win over fierce rivals Australia to clinch their fifth tournament win of the season and underline their status as the best team in the sport.

Australia fought bravely throughout and scored through Maddison Levi and Teagan Levi (two) against the Black Ferns. New Zealand, once again, though, showed their champion pedigree to win it with tries from Kelsey Teneti (two), Alena Saili and Katelyn Vahaakolo.

Player of the Final Teneti said: “It was a full fight and it didn’t take one person [to win it] – it took the whole team. Words can’t even describe the feeling and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of this amazing team.”

After yet another final win, captain Risi Pouri-Lane said: “It was about heart because finals footie can go either way, so we had to grind it out. But the belief in every single one of us was huge and we spoke about doing the simple things well.

“Those Aussie girls are so talented and we knew what we had to do to try and shut them down.”

New York Success

Alan Gilpin, World Rugby CEO, hailed the success of the weekend in the Big Apple as New York staged its first-ever Sevens tournament.

“It’s been amazing, what’s not to love? Sevens rugby in one of the best cities in the world. It’s been brilliant and just shows what’s possible for rugby in the US. The players have been excited to be in New York because it’s an iconic city.”

Attention now turns to the Championship in Hong Kong next month, scheduled for 17-19 April, after two days of thrilling action at the Sports Illustrated Stadium, in Harrison, New Jersey.

Women’s Tournament: Black Ferns Sevens Rule the World

The New Zealand Black Ferns Sevens officially confirmed their status as the dominant force in rugby sevens, securing the 2026 regular-season title with a day to spare. By booking their semi-final spot with three consecutive wins in Pool A, they became mathematically untouchable in the overall standings.

The Black Ferns opened their account with a clinical 46-5 demolition of Great Britain, followed by a decisive 31-10 victory over rivals Fiji.

Jorja Miller, the reigning Series Player of the Year, proved why she holds the mantle by scoring a brilliant brace against the Fijiana. They capped off the day by beating France 29-19, setting up a semi-final clash against the USA.

In Pool B, Australia matched New Zealand’s intensity. Led by the record-breaking Maddison Levi—the fastest player to reach 200 Series tries—the Australians swept their pool.

After crushing Japan 47-7 and Canada 40-0, they edged out the home favorites, USA, 26-19 in a physical encounter. Australia will now face Fiji in the second semi-final.

Men’s Tournament: Australia Topple the Blitzboks

The men’s bracket saw Australia claim the summit of Pool A after a grueling “Southern Hemisphere battle” against South Africa. In the final game of the day, Australia edged the Blitzboks 19-12.

Despite two tries from South Africa’s Selvyn Davids—who celebrated his 100th and 101st career tries—a late score from Jayden Blake secured the top spot for the Aussies.

Australian captain Henry Hutchison praised his side’s “physicality and grit,” noting the emotional weight of the day as the team wore black armbands in tribute to teammate Ben Dalton’s grandfather. Australia now moves on to face a dangerous Fiji side in the semi-finals.

South Africa’s Impi Visser, celebrating his milestone 50th HSBC Sevens tournament, led his team to victories over New Zealand (22-7) and France (12-5) before the narrow loss to Australia.

The Blitzboks remain locked in a two-horse race with Fiji for the men’s regular-season title, with their semi-final match against Argentina carrying massive championship implications.

Pool B: Los Pumas Rise to the Occasion

Argentina’s Los Pumas finished the day at the top of Pool B after a series of resilient performances. They began with a statement 31-12 win over Fiji and followed it up with a “classic” comeback against Spain, overturning a 26-7 halftime deficit to win 27-26.

Their day concluded with a hard-fought victory over Great Britain, ensuring they head into Championship Sunday with maximum momentum.

Fiji, needing a strong finish to keep their title hopes alive, bounced back from their loss to Argentina by dismantling Spain 43-12, highlighted by a hat-trick from Douglas Daveta.

This result ensures that the race for the men’s overall title will go down to the final matches in Harrison, New Jersey.

New Zealand and South Africa top of the HSBC SVNS world in Vancouver

Black Ferns Sevens maintain their long unbeaten record at BC Place, while Blitzboks laid down a marker ahead of the final event of the regular HSBC SVNS Series in New York.

South Africa added the HSBC SVNS Series Vancouver title to their Perth and Cape Town crowns this season and rocketed to the top of the men’s standings, level on points with Fiji.

The Blitzboks went unbeaten across the weekend to claim their first win in Canada since the Covid-shortened series in Edmonton in 2021.

Blitzboks captain Impi Visser’s focus was already switching to next weekend in New York when he spoke on the sidelines immediately after the final. “It’s an amazing feeling,” he said of their win. “Sometimes we take it for granted but it’s an amazing feeling and we’re really grateful for it.

“We’ve had a lot of changes – six changes from Perth to now and the thing we said we want to build is consistency. I think we’ve shown that through and through. We just need to keep up this momentum going into New York.”

Fiji made it five podium finishes in five HSBC SVNS Series tournaments, beating Australia to claim third, while Argentina, who had won the past four tournaments in Vancouver – recovered from a disappointing day one performance to claim fifth place. South Africa and Fiji are locked at the top of the men’s standings.

They’re level on log points, with Fiji just ahead having scored two match points more across the HSBC SVNS Series to date. The side that finishes top of the standings heading into the three-tournament World Championship series will be exempt from relegation to HSBC SVNS 2.

In the women’s competition, New Zealand extended their lead over Australia in the HSBC SVNS Series standings to eight points after claiming their fourth tournament title in five events this season.

Captain Risi Pouri-Lane pointed to the Black Ferns Sevens’ efforts to maintain consistency. “The biggest thing for us is that you can never get complacent and there’s always things you can work on and get better at. They make a big difference in the long run.”

USA beat France in the third-place play-off to end a nine-tournament wait for a podium finish, while Canada got the home crowd on their feet as they claimed fifth, and Japan claimed seventh at the end of an end-to-end play-off against Great Britain.

Milestones and Upsets Mark Explosive Opening Day at HSBC SVNS Vancouver

The HSBC SVNS in Vancouver delivered a dramatic and milestone‑packed opening day across both the men’s and women’s competitions, with Fiji and South Africa leading the charge in the men’s event while New Zealand’s Jorja Miller and Australia’s Maddison Levi lit up the women’s draw.

Men’s Competition: Fiji and South Africa Advance, Argentina Falter

Fiji extended their remarkable consistency with a fifth consecutive semi-final appearance, driven by another outstanding performance from Viwa Naduvalo. The winger crossed the 100‑try career mark and added five tries over three matches as Fiji recorded wins over France and Australia.

Argentina, the four‑time defending Vancouver champions, saw their 23‑match winning streak come to a dramatic end in the tournament opener. Australia edged them 17–15 before the South Americans slipped to additional defeats, finishing bottom of Pool B despite a spirited win over Fiji.

Australia secured early qualification with disciplined victories over Argentina and France, while Fiji’s dominant 35–14 win over the Aussies closed the pool stage in style.

In Pool A, South Africa marched through unbeaten, highlighted by Sebastiaan Jobb’s spectacular 80‑metre solo try against Spain. Their final match saw them fend off a strong New Zealand fightback to win 17–12 and set up a semi-final against Australia. Spain impressed with wins over Great Britain and New Zealand but narrowly missed out on progressing.

Fiji will face Spain in the second men’s semi-final.

Women’s Competition: Miller Hits 100, Levi Scores Eight

In the women’s event, New Zealand’s Jorja Miller celebrated her 100th career try during a dominant 43–5 victory over Japan. The Black Ferns Sevens completed the day with a perfect 3–0 record, extending their four‑year unbeaten run at BC Place.

Australia matched their rivals with an unbeaten day shaped by Maddison Levi’s incredible eight‑try haul. With sister Teagan rested, Madison Ashby orchestrated play as Levi crossed twice against Fiji, three times against Canada, and three more against the USA.

France also advanced after strong wins over Japan and Great Britain, although they fell to New Zealand in the pool decider. The USA sealed the final semi-final spot with victories over Canada and Fiji before falling to Australia.

As both competitions head into day two, Vancouver is set for blockbuster semi‑finals featuring the world’s most in‑form teams.

New Zealand and South Africa secure vital HSBC SVNS titles after a physical weekend of rugby in Australia.

Black Ferns Sevens Outclass Australia

The Black Ferns Sevens defeated Australia 29-7 to claim their third title of the season, adding the Perth crown to their wins in Dubai and Singapore. The victory grants New Zealand a four-point lead at the top of the series standings.

Player of the Final Kelsey Teneti, who scored two tries on either side of the break, described the win as emotional: “We carry our wahine and our country on our shoulders. To go back-to-back really means a lot.”

“It’s been three years in the making for this win. With so much family in the crowd, it felt like a home game.”
— Stacey Waaka

In the bronze final, France narrowly beat the USA thanks to a late try from Hawa Tounkara.

Blitzboks Power Past Fiji

In the men’s draw, South Africa secured their first Australian title in over a decade. The Blitzboks overcame Fiji in a physical encounter to add to their Cape Town trophy from earlier this season.

The decisive moment came from Ryan Oosthuizen, who muscled through three defenders to score. “Fiji is always a battle,” Oosthuizen remarked. “I’m not the fastest guy, so sometimes I need to run over people!”

Captain Siviwe Soyizwapi praised the squad’s depth: “The youngsters had to step up… they hit the sweet spot in Perth and played out of their socks.”

Australia took the bronze, coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 12-10 in a fiery Trans-Tasman clash.

Looking Ahead: Vancouver Pools

The draw for the next leg in Vancouver is set:

Category Pool A Pool B

In the men’s competition, hosts Australia secured a semi-final berth by finishing atop their pool, though they were pushed to the limit by Great Britain in a 24-21 nail-biter.

Meanwhile, Fiji dominated the “Pool of Death,” overcoming a 14-point deficit against South Africa to win 20-14 and claim the top spot in Pool A.

Men’s Action: Dramatic Finishes and Pool Upsets

New Zealand’s men’s side experienced a rollercoaster day, suffering a shock loss to Great Britain before bouncing back to stun France with a golden-point victory from Frank Vaenuku.

In Pool A, Argentina’s recent struggles continued; despite their status as back-to-back Perth winners, they slumped to the bottom of the pool after losses to Fiji, South Africa, and a resurgent Spanish side led by Jeremy Trevithick’s five tries.

Women’s Action: Australia and New Zealand Set the Pace

In the women’s draw, Australia and New Zealand remained unstoppable, both finishing the day with perfect records. The Black Ferns Sevens were particularly clinical, racking up 17 tries across three matches, including a dominant 31-0 victory over the USA.

Australia matched this intensity, fueled by Maddison Levi’s scoring prowess and a Heidi Dennis hat-trick, dispatching Great Britain, France, and Canada to secure their semi-final spot.

Semi-Final Matchups

The stage is set for a blockbuster Sunday in Perth. In the men’s bracket, Fiji will face New Zealand while Australia takes on South Africa. In the women’s competition, the Black Ferns Sevens meet France, and Australia will battle the USA for a place in the final.

Fiji men reign supreme against France, while the Black Ferns Sevens overpower Australia in Singapore

Fiji edged out France 21-12 in a thrilling final to sign off the Singapore leg of the HSBC SVNS Series in typically dramatic fashion.
The French fought hard throughout but it was Fijian flair that won the day as they capped a brilliant weekend in style.

France charged into a 12-0 interval lead with tries from Jordan Sepho and Paulin Riva. But Fiji, blessed with so many attacking options,
steadied themselves and roared back to take the title with tries from Viwa Naduvalo, Kavekini Tanivanuakula and Pilipo Bukayaro.

Player of the match Naduvalo said: “First of all I want to thank the Lord Almighty for giving us the victory. Credit to the boys for giving
their effort – we work together as a unit and we came up with the win.”

It was Fiji’s first title of the season but their second in a row in Singapore, a city they enjoy playing in.

Naduvalo added: “I made my debut here, so it’s like playing at home. Yes, Singapore is a great place to play.”

Captain Jeremaia Matana echoed his team-mate’s sentiments after their third comeback win of the weekend, following previous successes over
South Africa and New Zealand.

An emotional Matana said: “It’s amazing and I want to give the glory and honour to the Man above. I’m so happy and proud of the boys.
We came back strongly and I want to thank the boys for their hard work.”

New Zealand beat South Africa 14-12 in the third-place play-off courtesy of Michael Manson’s brilliant winning try, while Australia finished fifth.

Black Ferns Sevens dominate women’s final

In the women’s competition, New Zealand beat fierce rivals Australia 36-7 in the final of the HSBC SVNS Series, securing their third successive
title in Singapore.

In a sport built on rivalries, these two powerhouses had met in the previous two finals this season, with New Zealand title winners in Dubai
before Australia reigned supreme in Cape Town.

The Black Ferns Sevens took the honours in a city where they continue to make themselves at home ahead of next weekend’s tournament in Perth, Australia.

It was a poignant victory for New Zealand and an apt tribute to honour the memory of those who died in the recent landslides at Mount Maunganui.
This tragedy is close to home with the women’s and men’s teams based on New Zealand’s North Island.

The platform for victory was set with clinical braces from Jazmin Felix-Hotham and Jorja Miller, two players who illuminated the tournament in
Singapore, and a try from Mahina Paul.

Bienne Terita hit back for Australia but Katelyn Vahaakolo added another try for the Black Ferns Sevens to end the weekend with their fifth straight win.

There was much to admire in New Zealand’s performance as they capped a superb stay in Singapore, scoring 218 points overall.

Two-try Miller, the player of the final, said: “I’m so stoked and proud of the girls. It’s been an awesome atmosphere in a beautiful city.”

Captain Risi Pouri-Lane proudly declared: “Every single one of the girls stepped up this weekend. I’m so proud of them and really stoked for the team.
Defence is the best part of the game but we’ve got another tournament in Perth next weekend. Things can change quickly, but we want to do it all over again.”

Meanwhile, Canada clinched third place after beating USA 24-19 courtesy of Olivia Apps’ dramatic extra-time winner, while France finished fifth.

Looking ahead to Perth

Following an action-packed showdown in Singapore in front of 40,000 fans across the weekend, the draw for the fourth round in Perth was made by
English rugby international Danny Care.

Newly-crowned men’s champions Fiji will take on South Africa, Spain and Argentina in Pool A when the tournament gets under way in Australia next weekend.
Losing finalists France head a tough-looking Pool B that includes New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain.

In the women’s competition, Singapore champions New Zealand have been pitted against USA, Fiji and Japan in Pool A. Beaten finalists Australia
will face Canada, France and Great Britain in Pool B.

HSBC SVNS Singapore is set to return to The Kallang Stadium on 30 and 31 January 2027. More information on the series can be found at

Semi-final line-up set with Fiji, New Zealand, France and South Africa in mouthwatering last four

The stage is set for two wonderful semi-finals of the HSBC SVNS Singapore tomorrow after Fiji, New Zealand, France and South Africa booked their places in thrilling fashion on Saturday.

The All Blacks Sevens clinched their first HSBC SVNS title since Singapore back in 2024 when emerging triumphant in Dubai two months ago.

Now they have the chance to go all the way again on Sunday after progressing to a semi-final showdown with Fiji, who dramatically topped Pool A after an extra-time win over the Blitzboks.

The other semi-final will see South Africa take on France in what promises to be another occasion to savour at the Singapore National Stadium tomorrow.

POOL A: Fiji and Blitzboks show their class to reach last four

Fiji will be overflowing with self-belief when they take on New Zealand in Sunday’s semi-final.

Three Pool A wins against Great Britain, Spain and South Africa have seen to that and encouraged hopes the Fijians could repeat last year’s title win in Singapore.

In the final game of Saturday, they thrillingly beat the Blitzboks 24-19 in extra-time to top Pool A and lay down an emphatic marker.

Fiji, noted for their dazzling attacking skills, opened with a 22-19 win over Great Britain with the prolific Viwa Naduvalo claiming a superb hat-trick.

Nacani Boginisoko added Fiji’s fourth while Charlton Kerr, Brent Jackson and Joshua Radcliffe scored for Great Britain.

South Africa beat Spain 21-14 in their opener with tries from Donavan Don, Zander Reynders and Shilton van Wyk, with Anton Legorburu Anso and Francisco Cosculluela scoring in reply.

Fiji claimed their second win of the day with a resounding 28-7 victory over Spain courtesy of tries from Iowane Teba, George Bose, Terio Veilawa and Nacani Boginisoko.

Josep Serres claimed the Spaniards’ only try as they were outscored by four tries to one.

South Africa then enjoyed a huge win after beating Great Britain 33-12.

A sublime display harvested tries for Donavan Don, Tristan Leyds, Shilton van Wyk, Ryan Oosthuizen and Sebastiaan Jobb while Joshua Radcliffe and Matt Davidson went over for Great Britain.

Spain beat Great Britain 29-14 to secure their only win with tries from Jaime Manteca, Juan Ramos, Jeremy Trevithick (two) and Gabriel Rocaries.

Marcus Kershaw and Brent Jackson replied for Great Britain, who lost all three games.

The real drama was still to come, though, as Fiji edged out South Africa in the final game of the day.

Tristan Leyds, Donavan Don and Christie Grobbelaar touched down for the Blitzboks but Fiji were not to be denied.

Terio Veilawa scored twice and Jeremaia Matana was also on target before Nacani Boginisoko burst clear to score a superb winner in extra-time.

POOL B: France top group and New Zealand also progress

France did not win a game in Singapore last year but earned a notable 19-12 victory over New Zealand in their opening game on Saturday.

Simon Desert, Antoine Zeghdar and Nelson Epee touched down with Akuila Rokolisoa and Regan Ware replying for New Zealand.

The All Black Sevens players wore black armbands as a mark of respect to honour those who died in the recent landslides at Mount Maunganui.

This tragedy is close to home with their women’s and men’s teams based on New Zealand’s North Island.

Led out by captain Henry Hutchison – the most capped Australian in Sevens history with 62 tournaments – Australia beat a gutsy Argentina 19-14 in their opener.

They established control through Aden Ekanayake, Jayden Blake and Dietrich Roache before Los Pumas 7s hit back through Marcos Moneta and Santiago Mare to ensure a tense finish.

France showed their class again with a comprehensive 31-7 win over Australia.

Simon Desert, Jordan Sepho (two), Nelson Epee and Paul Leraitre touched down for the French, with the Australians’ sole reply coming from Aden Ekanayake.

There was a much closer-fought affair when New Zealand edged out Argentina 26-20 with tries from Tone Ng Shiu, Frank Vaenuku, Kitiona Vai and 19-year-old Kele Lasaqa’s dramatic late winner.

Santino Zangara, Santiago Vera Feld, Marcos Moneta and Eliseo Morales were on target for Los Pumas 7s.

New Zealand then beat Australia 29-10 with tries from Akuila Rokolisoa, Sofai Notoa-Tipo, Rob Rush (two) and Michael Manson, with Aden Ekanayake and Jayden Blake scoring for the Australians.

Tries from Paulin Riva, Simon Desert and Ali Dabo gave France a 19-15 win over Argentina, for whom Santino Zangara scored a delightful hat-trick.

Australia bounced back from their disappointing loss to New Zealand in Dubai with a flawless run in Cape Town, defeating the Black Ferns Sevens in the final.

Isabella Nasser led the way in a dominant performance, securing Player of the Final honours. France earned another podium place with a dramatic comeback against USA, while Japan edged Canada late for their third win over them in two tournaments.

In the men’s competition, South Africa thrilled the home crowd by becoming the first team to win back-to-back HSBC SVNS titles in Cape Town.

A late try from Christie Grobbelaar sealed a dramatic comeback win over Argentina, who had looked in control early in the second half. Captain Impi Visser praised his team’s resilience, noting their tough path to the final.

Earlier results saw Fiji secure third place and Dubai champions New Zealand finish fifth.
